Starting a Process
Continuing the Process
Finishing the Process
Relating Steps in Time
Actions Happening Together
When sequencing words start a sentence, use a comma after them:
β "First, open the file." / "Then, save your changes."
β "First open the file." (missing comma)

Examples - Correct & Incorrect Usage

Clear sequence with comma after each marker
Before + -ing form (submitting)
Once + clause (condition before next step)
Simultaneous action with another process
After + -ing form for sequence
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Too many "-ly" forms sound awkward. Mix it up: "First... Next... Then... Finally..."
Wrong! Use -ing after "after". Say: "After completing the form..."
Wrong! "During" + noun, "While" + clause. Say: "While I was working..." or "During my work..."
Listening Exercise
10 minutesScenario: David, a project manager, explains the next steps for the Phoenix Project to his team.
Audio Transcript: Phoenix Project Update
David: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the weekly project update. I want to quickly explain the next steps for the 'Phoenix Project'.
So, first, the development team needs to complete the final software tests by this Wednesday. This is our top priority. While they are working on that, I need the marketing team to finalize the press release.
Then, on Thursday morning, we will have a short review meeting. When we have the results from the tests, we can approve the software for launch. After that, the marketing team can send out the press release. We must be very coordinated here.
I will be out of the office on Friday morning, but please don't wait for me. As soon as the press release is approved, you should publish it on our website.
I have one more point. While you are managing your tasks, please update your progress in our project management tool. It's important we all see the current status. I'll check the system when I get back on Friday afternoon.
Finally, we will have a launch party next week to celebrate all our hard work! But first, let's focus on this week's plan. Does anyone have any questions about this sequence?
Question 1: What is the first thing the development team needs to do?
Question 2: According to David, when can the marketing team send the press release?
Question 3: Complete the sentence: "I'll check the system _________ I get back on Friday afternoon."
